Ainster House

Anstruther, East Neuk of Fife

Beautifully brutalist.

Tucked away within the East Neuk region of Fife, lies the historic port-town of Anstruther. An assortment of coloured homes harmonised by shimmering rooftops and a scattering of brightly hued fishing boats make up this tiny, tranquil concealed cove. A ruggedly serene spot that’s perfectly placed for Scarinish Studio’s ambitious Ainster House project.

The idea of the project was to bring the charismatic outdoors, indoors. We aimed to echo the simple yet brutal nature of the eastern harbour piers. The backstory that shrouds Ainster House is one of intrigue and peril – it was once heralded (and actively linked with the local smuggling of brandy and rum), as the notorious Smuggler’s Inn, a place frequented as far back as the 16th century.

We wanted to build on this enchanting legacy. So, we kept much of the old structure, and complemented it with a pared-back, almost brutalist use of materials. The inspiration was to create an understated, humble dwelling, which stood in stark contrast to the area’s dynamic landscape and dramatic sea-views – resulting in a wonderfully immersive experience for guests.

Within the home, we added a touch of French flair – stylish, contemporary Parisian lighting DCW Lighting, which would subtly illuminate our cosily crafted spaces, boutique bedrooms, and the distinct cast concrete kitchen. Limestone flooring and a vast open fireplace completed our interior refurbishment.

The Smuggler’s Inn was established in the 16th century, and with this new breath of life, we hope this subtly planned property will be enjoyed by generations to come.
