Edinburgh, Scotland
When Stuart Ralston invited us to shape the next chapter of Lyla, the brief was to translate the restaurant’s identity into a series of guest rooms—spaces that feel calm, intimate, and effortlessly refined. Set within a Georgian townhouse on Royal Terrace, the project builds on the character of the existing building, allowing its architectural language to lead.
The four bedrooms occupy the upper floors of the former 21212. Generous ceiling heights, ornate cornicing, and large sash windows form the foundation of the design, carefully restored and integrated into a more restrained, contemporary setting. A palette of light-washed oak, limewashed walls, and soft tonal finishes creates a sense of continuity and quiet luxury throughout.
Materiality is layered with subtlety. Bespoke joinery incorporates marble surfaces and tailored detailing, while bouclé and velvet upholstery introduce softness and depth. The overall composition is intentionally understated—balancing texture, tone, and proportion to create a calm, immersive environment.
A distinctly Scottish sensibility runs throughout. Textiles from the Isle of Bute sit alongside throws by Hilary Grant and cushions by Røros Tweed, grounding the spaces in place and craft. Lighting by Tom Dixon and DCW éditions adds a contemporary counterpoint, while Domus tiling—also used within the restaurant—provides a quiet reference to Edinburgh’s maritime context.
The experience will be further extended with the addition of a private dining room. Designed as a sculptural, atmospheric setting for up to 12 guests, the space centres around a solid oak table, with bespoke lighting and the reinstatement of the original fireplace bringing a renewed sense of Georgian grandeur.
The result is a natural continuation of Lyla—an environment that feels cohesive, immersive, and timeless, offering guests a seamless transition between dining and rest.
