Edinburgh, Scotland
Drawing inspiration from Vivien’s rebellious character and unapologetic indulgence, we approached the project as a carefully choreographed experience. Guests are invited below street level into a richly atmospheric setting, designed to evoke a sense of discovery from the moment they arrive.
The entrance was transformed with glossy crimson doors and a vintage Victorian lantern, creating an immediate sense of intrigue. Beyond, a staircase draped in deep blue velvet leads visitors down into the bar, guided by a bespoke neon installation inspired by Vivien’s own handwriting. As music drifts upwards from below, anticipation builds before the space gradually reveals itself.
At the centre of the venue sits a compact yet commanding bar beneath a bespoke illuminated lightbox spanning three metres in length. Casting a warm crimson glow across the room, it acts as the heart of the scheme and one of the primary sources of light, complemented by layers of candlelight and concealed illumination that enhance the intimacy of the space.
The material palette is rich and restrained. Walls and ceilings are enveloped in deep earthy tones, while moments of colour provide contrast and character throughout. A cobalt-blue exposed stone wall and glazed teal tiles introduce depth, while marble tabletops, plush upholstery and carefully selected finishes bring a sense of understated luxury.
A large communal table anchors the rear room, encouraging conversation and connection, while the bartenders remain at the centre of the experience, crafting inventive cocktails in full view of guests. Moments of theatre continue throughout the evening, with staff disappearing through a bronze walk-in fridge in search of ingredients and inspiration.
Though modest in scale, Vivien Bar delivers a richly immersive experience. Hidden beneath Edinburgh’s New Town, it is a space shaped by atmosphere, narrative and detail — a contemporary cocktail bar where design and hospitality combine to create something memorable and distinct.
